Melt Aluminum with Charcoal?

I have been always fascinated by how man (and woman) can manipulate metal, but always thought this was out of reach for mere mortals such as myself.  Fear no more, the "Mad Machinist" is here.  During his life Dave Gingery penned several books on these subjects, including titles such as "The Charcoal Foundry", "The Metal Lathe"  and many others.  These books are re-printed by Lindsay Publications, in the flatlands of Illinois (as we so fondly refer to our southern neighbor state here in Wisconsin).  Have at it.  Order their catalog.  Contribute to the local economy.

Other titles from other authors in the catalog include "Model Steam Locomotives", "Convert It" (how to change an internal combustion engine vehicel to electrical power) and many others.

If you thought Terrestrial Air Traffic Control was scary...

Perhaps we should consider how to recycle(or at least aggregate) the larger chunks of space debris floating out there. Now that would be a good project for a Google employee to spend his/her 20 percent time. Perhaps better than the Google Lunar X-Prize competition (an idea that I do like).

The sky is falling....well....maybe not

Makes you wish you had built that underground concrete bunker during the Y2K scare....??
